WAYS OF INVESTMENT IN MUTUAL FUND/

Hi, Friends let us find out the ways by which we can invest in the different types of Funds:
Mainly there are 3 ways to invest in a mutual fund:-

Types of Investment Plans

1)  Lump Sum
2)  SIP (Systematic Investment Plan)
3)  Automatic Reinvestment Plan

Let us find out the importance of the above options one by one:

In the Lump Sum option, the investor invests his money only once from his bank to the desired scheme of Mutual Fund. The investment gets the applicable NAV of that particular day of investment.

In the SIP option, an investor invests a fixed amount of money monthly or quarterly either through post-dated cheques or through a direct debit instruction mandate given by the investor, to the bank on a particular date. Such plans are more suitable for investors who want to save money in small amounts every month from his/her monthly income.

SIPs also help the Rupee cost average investment, let us see by an example :

Let us say that we want to purchase gold from the market in monthly intervals for the period of 12 months, we have to pay the price as per the market rate of gold every month. In a 12 months period, the average rate of gold works out to be much less as per the rupee cost average method, which reduces the purchase cost of the gold, hence the investor profits from this type of investment in the long term. The above method of investment is done for Time Diversification.

In the Automatic Reinvestment plan, there are growth and dividend options. In the growth plan, the regular dividend is not paid to the investor, but the returns which are accumulated are reflected in the NAV  of the scheme. In the Dividend plan, there are 2 sub-options 1) Dividend Payout; 2) Divided Reinvestment. Under this Automatic reinvestment plan when a dividend is declared, the dividend surplus is reinvested and its units are issued at the ex-dividend NAV.
This shows how investors are benefitted by investing in the above type of strategy.

  • Distributors should highlight the risk factors involved in the mutual fund schemes and should not misinform about the performance of a particular scheme.
  • Distributors have to inform investors to read the SID/KIM documents before deciding to invest in the scheme.
  • Distributors should not assure of any returns in any type of scheme unless the documents are mentioned in this regard. Advantages and Documents of Mutual Funds Investments/ म्यूचुअल फंड निवेश के लाभ और दस्तावेज

ADVANTAGES OF MUTUAL FUND INVESTMENT TO THE INVESTOR

The investor enjoys the following advantages :
    • Professional Management: The funds are invested by the professional fund management team that analyzes the performance and prospects of companies and selects suitable investments in line with the objective of the schemes.
    • Diversifications: It is difficult for small investors to diversify across different investment schemes as well as over a large number of companies. The investor has a risk of non-diversification on his investments because of low capital. A mutual fund provides him the best option for the small capital, in which the unitholder or the investor gets a diversified portfolio.
    • Convenient Administration: Investing in a mutual fund reduces paperwork, also avoids many problems such as bad deliveries, delayed payments, and following up with the brokers and companies. Mutual funds save your time by making it easy and convenient.
    • Higher Return Potential: With a view of medium to long term, mutual funds have the potential of generating higher returns as they invest in a diversified portfolio of selected securities.
    • Transparency: The Net Asset Value of open-ended funds is disclosed on day to day basis, whereas the value of the portfolio is disclosed every month which ensures transparency to the investors.
    • Low Cost: Mutual Funds are cheap to invest in as compared to directly investing in the capital market because of the benefits in brokerage, and other fees, which are avoided in mutual funds which translates to lower costs for the investors.
    • Liquidity: In the case of Open-ended which we had seen in the previous blog which is redeemed at any time at the prevailing NAV rate. For the close-ended schemes, you can sell your units on a stock exchange at the prevailing market price or avail of the facility of repurchase.
    • Flexibility: When it comes to mutual funds they offer a lot of flexibility where the investments can be made in a lump sum or in a systematic investment form on a monthly or quarterly basis starting with a very small amount of investments in which withdrawal can be in full or part or on a systematic basis.
    • Choice of the Scheme: Mutual Funds offer a variety of options for the selection of the schemes to suit your varying needs and requirement over a lifetime.
    • Well Regulated: As the Mutual Funds are registered with SEBI and are functioning as per the strict regulations designed to protect the investor interest and also the operations are monitored by the SEBI.

Classification Of Mutual Fund by Asset Allocations/

Till now we had seen the classification and Types of the Funds as per the different Investment Objectives.

In this blog, we are classifying as per the Asset which is collected by the Mutual funds from the investor which is invested as per the Allocation in a different mix of equity and debt instruments or securities and in a particular percentage. Following are the funds which categorize in these types:

  •  BALANCED FUNDS:  These funds are a mix of debt and equity securities and would vary based on the objective of the fund. Such funds are better for those investors who are looking at moderate capital appreciation as well as the preservation of the capital of the principal investment done by them.
  •  MONEY MARKET/ LIQUID FUND SCHEMES: This is a type of Debt fund, which invests in money market instruments; like for eg. Interbank Call Money, T- Bills, or Treasury Bills, Commercial Paper, CD's or Certificates Of Deposit. The securities it invests in are short-term in nature, that is, maturity is less than 1 year, and hence the interest rate risk is very less. Such funds are considered to be the safest of all investments. These funds are highly liquid means they can be withdrawn easily, and are ideal for Corporate and Individual Investors looking to park their surplus or extra funds for short-term or periods or awaiting a good or favorable opportunity of investment.
  • GILT FUNDS: These funds invest only in government securities. Default risk is not there as these papers are guaranteed by the government. There are two types of gilt funds:

    1. Short-term gilt fund: It primarily invests in those gilt papers which will mature within a year. Here the interest rate risk is present but is lower.

    2. Long-term gilt fund: It invests in those gilt papers which have a medium to long-term maturity profile. This fund faces interest rate risk.

  • HYBRID FUND: These funds invest in a mix of debt and equity. Just like Balanced funds are a type of hybrid funds. The other funds which fall under the hybrid fund category are:

Monthly income plans: Generally these funds invest a small part of fund into equities (ranging from 5% to 25%) and the rest into debt securities. Their primary focus is to generate regular income for the investors. Though the name suggests monthly income, these funds may or may not declare monthly dividends or income to the investors

Asset allocation plans: In these types of funds, the fund manager has the flexibility to change allocation between debt and equity-based on the market situation.

  • EXCHANGE TRADED FUNDS: Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are essentially index funds that are listed and traded on exchanges like stocks. ETFs enable investors to gain broad exposure to entire stock markets as well as in specific sectors with relative ease, on a real-time basis and at a lower cost than many other forms of investing. An ETF is a basket of stocks that reflects the composition of an index like; S&P, CNX Nifty, BSE Sensex, CNX Bank Index, etc. The ETF's trading value is based on the net asset value (NAV) of the underlying stocks that it represents.

  • GOLD EXCHANGE TRADED FUNDS: (GETFs) Gold exchange-traded funds offer investors an innovative, cost-efficient, and secure way to access the gold market. Gold ETFs are intended to offer investors a means of participating in the gold bullion market by buying and selling units of gold on the stock exchanges, without taking physical delivery of gold.

  • REAL ESTATE FUNDS: These funds invest directly into real estate, fund real estate projects, lend money to real estate developers or buy shares of real estate companies.

  • А QUANTITATIVE FUND: Quantitative fund is an investment fund that selects securities based on quantitative analysis. The managers of such funds build computer-based models of Softwares to determine whether or not an investment is attractive. In a pure "quant shop”, the final decision to buy or sell is made by the computer-based model. However, there is a middle option where the fund manager judges as per his own decision in addition to the quantitative model.
  • FUNDS OF FUNDS (FOFs): As the name proposes, this fund invests in schemes of other mutual funds. The portfolio of these schemes comprises only of units of other mutual fund schemes.
  • RAJIV GANDHI EQUITY SAVING SCHEME (RGESS): Under this scheme, the investment will be under a fixed and flexible lock-in period.
    • No sale or pledge is possible in the fixed lock-in period
    • An investor can churn the portfolio in the flexible lock-in period, subject to conditions.
    • This scheme provides a deduction from the taxable income for eligible investors up to 50% of the amount invested in eligible schemes.
    • There is an investment limit of Rs. 50,000 per year.
    • Persons earning up to 12 lakhs a year are allowed to invest in this scheme.
    • The benefits under this scheme can be availed for 3 consecutive financial years from the initial year.
    • The units under this scheme will be held in a Demat account opened for the RGESS
    • Those investors who do not seek tax benefits can hold the units in physical form.

Other Classification Of Mutual Fund/

In the previous post, we have seen the different Types of Mutual Funds.
In this post, we will learn about the Other Classification by which a Mutual Fund is categorized and which is as below:
  •  Debt /Income Funds:  They primarily invest in medium to long term debt instruments that are issued by private companies, banks, financial institutions, and with government, etc. They are generally less risky as compared to Equities but are subject to Credit Risk(which is also called Risk of Default )
With the different investment objective, the following funds are categorised:
  • Diversified Debt Fund: They invest in all securities issued by entities that belong to all sectors of the market. As investments are diversified to all different sectors the risk in this type of fund is reduced.
  • Focused Debt Fund: They are narrow focus funds. Their investments are confined to selected debt securities, issued by companies of a specific sector or industry. They have high risk as compared to the diversified debt funds due to their narrow focus, for e.g funds that invest only in corporate debentures or in tax-free infrastructure or municipal bonds.
  • High Yield Debt Funds: Debt funds try to minimize the risk of default by investing in securities issued by only those borrowers who are considered to be of "investment grade". However, high yield debt funds invest in those securities which carry a high risk,  as they give higher returns. Such securities are considered to be of below investment grade. These funds are more volatile and have higher default risk.
  • Assured return fundsAlthough it is not necessary that the fund will always meet its objective or provide assured returns to investors, there can be funds that come with ur lock-in period and offered assurance of annual returns to investors during the lock-in period. Any shortage in returns is suffered by the sponsors of the Asset Management Company (AMC). In the past, UTI has offered assured return schemes (that are monthly income plans of UTI) that assured specified returns to investors in the future. UTI was not able to fulfill its promises and faced large shortfalls in returns, so hence the government has to intervene and they took over UTI payment obligations on itself. Currently, no AMC in India offers assured return schemes to investors.
  • Fixed maturity plans: It is also called F.M.P where the investment schemes floated by mutual funds and which are close-ended with a fixed tenure, the maturity period ranging from 1 month to 3 to 5 years. These plans are predominantly debt-oriented, while some of them may have a small equity component. The objective of such a scheme is to generate steady returns over a fixed maturity period and protect the investor against market fluctuations. FMP's are typically passively managed fixed income schemes with the fund manager does locking into investments with maturities are corresponding with the maturity of the plan. FMP's are not guaranteed products or schemes.
next blog we will see Classification of Mutual funds as per Asset Allocation.

Types of Mutual Funds/

Now we are going to find out the different types and the Classification of the Mutual Funds
There are mainly two types of funds:
    • Close-Ended
    •  Open-Ended
So let us see, what do we mean by the terms given above
In the close-ended fund:
  • Units are sold by the funds only one time, that is at the time of new fund offer.
  • The corpus of a closed-ended fund remains unchanged at all times.
  • After the closure of the offer, buying and selling of units by the investors directly from the funds are not allowed and that they are generally traded at a discount to NAV, but as the maturity comes closer the discount narrows. Generally, such funds are listed on the stock exchange, where we can buy or sell the units of the scheme.
  • Some schemes of this fund give an additional option of selling your units to the mutual fund back through periodic repurchases at NAV-related prices as per the SEBI regulations which ensure at least one of the two options provided to investors for selling and exit from the close-ended schemes
In the open-ended fund :
  • These do not have a fixed maturity.
  • An investor can buy and sell units at any point in time in an open-end fund. The key feature of this A fund is liquidity. The fund size of an open-end fund keeps on changing based on units being bought and sold by the investors.

  •   In April, the MF industry added 1 lakh investors with PAN, taking the overall count to 2.04 crore investors from 2.03 crore investors in March 2020. As there are 4.50 lakh investors without PAN which takes the overall investors to count to 2.09 crore as in April 2020.
  •  However, if we go into detail, the MF industry has seen a marginal slowdown in terms of the addition of new investors. The Mutual fund industry had added 1.45 lakh, new investors, in March 2020, 2.23 lakh in February 2020, and 1.51 lakh in January 2020.

  •  By looking at the above fact friends you must have understood how mutuals funds have been an important class of Investments to the investors in spite of Lockdown been extended several times.
